The Surprise Axolotl & The Story of How We Began

People often ask us how we got started, and it’s a fun story to tell. A few years back, my husband Jeremy had a pair of beautiful breeding angelfish that he cared for with much interest. These are beautiful fish that mate for life and one is fortunate to own a mated pair. They were his pets, but at the same time a project that required attention, dedication, and a bit of research. His work schedule caused successful breeding to be a challenge. Unsure about how to manage their baby-raising needs, Jeremy decided to seek out some expert advice. He visited a local pet store, hoping to gather insights on the best practices for breeding and nurturing angelfish fry.

After speaking with the owner of the pet store he discovered that the owner had a keen interest in Jeremy's breeding pair. They spent some time discussing the details of angelfish care and the owner expressed a unique proposition: he was interested in trading Jeremy's pair of angelfish for a young axolotl. Jeremy had never heard of an axolotl before and was a bit confused at what he was talking about. The owner showed him a sketch, and Jeremy was skeptical because the creature looked like something straight out of a cartoon, with its feathery gills and big

smile.

The owner insisted it was indeed real and looked like the drawing in real life too. This definitely caused a real sense of curiosity in Jeremy, and he decided to visit the owner’s home to see the axolotl in person. This visit turned out to be a pivotal moment in his life. When he saw the axolotl he was captured by its uniqueness. It looked just like that silly cartoon sketch. It was a juvenile axolotl with jet black coloring and glowing green eyes. Jeremy was thoroughly intrigued and made the trade without hesitation.

When I met Jeremy, the axolotl was one of the first things he showed me. I was fascinated by its unusual appearance, it just stood there looking at me. The axolotl became more than just a pet; it sparked a new found interest in both of us. We began to explore the world of axolotl ownership, looking for others that owned them as well. Discovering its behavior, personality and needs became quite a journey. This journey transformed our lives and ultimately became the driving inspiration for all we do today. Our love for axolotls not only became a dominant part of our lives but also led us to create a community where we could share our experiences and knowledge with others. It’s amazing how a simple trade at a pet store can lead to such a profound journey!
